News from the Starboard Spreader   by Justin Fallstrom, Vice Commodore

Here it is the beginning of summer and I am still pulling double duty. How can this be!? As your oh-so-dedicated Vice Commodore and Quartermaster, I thought I would take this opportunity to inform you as to several happenings that have happened over the past quarter.

We started Spring Quarter off with a bang. Two very successful Boat On The Lawns filled almost all of the novice classes that I was able to arrange, and at one point I counted 151 students signed up for beginner classes. On top of this we had a large variety of other interesting classes including an advanced catamaran class that involved working on all of the big cats in order to sail. I decided to participate in this course taught by cat chief extraordinaire John Courter. What we had hoped would be a few sessions of repair turned into a quarter of tedious maintenance. Those of us that stuck with the class to the end learned a lot about cat sailing, and why we never want to own a big cat ourselves. Overall I received good reports from all of our dedicated instructors and their students with only minor dinghy casualties.

Topping off such a hectic quarter for our teachers, we all got together for an always-delicious brunch at Ivars Salmon House. I believe I counted 20 in attendance that were treated by the club and another seven that chose to join us on their own. Overall it was a great big yacht club outing that was enjoyed by all.

On the QM front, I have been working to restock our hardware cabinets and keep people moving on current projects. I have been moderately successful at this and have also maintained my duties as a member of the Whaler Mafia, in putting a down payment on a new-to-us thirteen-foot whaler. We should be seeing it soon at the dock with new letters and bottom paint.

I hope everyone has a great summer quarter and that we have some wind! Check out our new web based class sign ups that Webmaster Matt has worked so hard on. It is very cool and makes my life a lot easier. If you want to take a class use it! If you want to teach a class let me know. It is very easy to add a class and I know everyone wants to teach! Happy sailing!
