Intro to sailing

Sailing can seem pretty intimidating to learn, with many unfamiliar terms and completely alien concepts. We've written this guide for new members with no sailing or boating experience whatsoever.

A few things to keep in mind when reading this guide: 
  1. It contains enough fundamental sailing knowledge to help you get started and get the most out of your lesson.
  2. It won't make complete sense until you get out on the water for your first time, but reading it ahead of time will help you get the most out of your first sail.
  3. The only way to get better at sailing is to practice! Referring back to this guide after each time on the water will help you learn faster.
  4. Lastly, just because we tell you to do it one way, doesn't mean there's no other method that works just as well.
Terminology: Unfortunately there is a ton of it! All sailing words have been hyperlinked to the glossary, while any terms relating to parts of the boat are hyperlinked to our boat diagram.
