Destination Day Island by Heather Witt, reciprocal moorage chair

Reciprocal moorages are one of the benefits of WYC membership. We have reciprocal privileges with 22 clubs from Canada to South Puget Sound. For more info check the reciprocal moorage website.

Day Island Yacht Club is one of WYC’s more interesting reciprocal moorages. Located just south of the Tacoma Narrows on the east side, DIYC is a nice place to visit, if you can get there! DIYC is not actually on Day Is., but rather on the mainland shore inside the very small bay created by the island. The entrance is narrow, shallow, and deceptive. The boat before us entered on the wrong side and ran in fear after watching his depth meter! Hug the boathouses on the right to stay in the channel. A few daymarks to port mark the channel and the drying shoal in the entrance. When you can make a 45 degree turn to the guest dock, head in. The water depth makes it even more interesting. Local tides must be more than a foot deeper than your draft for the channel to be used. There is a depth gauge at the entrance to remind you. A local informed us, groundings occur frequently, and they are all presented at the monthly meetings! Just because you’re in doesn’t mean you can stay. The deep part of the dock has 3 feet at zero tide. Plus tides are your friend. The amenities are worth the hassle. The friendly caretaker will loan you a key for a deposit, and show you the showers, restrooms, and rec room with TV, couches, reading, and a pool table for your use. There is also ice, and free water and power. For the adventurous, the grocery store is a mile away, and an exploration of Day Is. makes for a pleasant hike.
