UW Sailing Team Report by Kristie Fenn
The UW Sailing Team is open to students of the University of Washington who are interested in participating in competitive dinghy sailing. For more information check out their web page at http://students.washington.edu/~claireh/sailing.html
Spring is coming up soon, and the racing team is doing its best to gear up and get ready for what looks to be an active spring. We still rank in the top twenty in the nation despite a relaxed January off. However, we made up for lost time with a very busy February, practicing three or four days a week. We recently made a good showing at the Jeremy McIntyre Team Race at Stanford the first weekend of March, and plan to attend the New England Team Race in order to tune up for a competitive showing at Nationals in June.
We are excited about our Spring Break plans. The first weekend a group will be attending the Truxton Umpstead regatta at the Naval Academy while hopefully our women’s team will compete in the St. Mary’s Women’s Regatta. After that the whole team will head to St. Mary’s for the week to practice with the two of the top-ranked teams in the country, St. Mary’s and Tufts University. The week will wrap up with another regatta, the New England Team Race. It will be hectic and crazy, with one van between fifteen of us, but we’ll get to spend the majority of every day on the water sailing, which makes it worth it!
Later in the spring we’ll be attending the Rainier Cup down in Oregon, hosted by the University of Oregon, as well a women’s clinic at Western Washington University and the St. Francis Intersectional in San Francisco at the St. Francis Yacht Club. After that come Qualifiers and Nationals! Needless to say, we’ll be practicing hard every week. With all this activity, the spring will fly by.
We appreciate all the support the Washington Yacht Club has given us this year. The team plans on hosting another clinic with the Washington Yacht Club at the WAC in May. We hope you all can join us!
