A Day in the Cruise of New Salt by Matt Squires
New Salt is a Falmouth Cutter 22 sailboat owned by WYC members Heather Witt and Matt Squires. They went on an extended cruise of Puget Sound and British Columbia in the summer of 1999, and this is an excerpt from their log book.
Beach Garden Marina, BC 7/17/99
0300 Our WYC burgee has developed an acute case of St. Vitus’ Dance, flapping loudly against our main halyard. No amount of tossing, turning, ignoring, pillow diving, or praying to Aeolus the wind god will silence the damn thing. I’ll try playing a “pretend I’m asleep and maybe my partner will fix it” contest with Heather.
0400 I lose. Grudgingly,
I climb the ratlines in bare feet at 4 in the morning and tie down the shaking
flag. With the burgee problem solved, we settle back into slumber.
0500 A sortie of thirsty mosquitoes dive-bombs us in our snug and peaceful cabin. Since we haven’t fought morning mosquitoes before, we are completely unprepared for this ruthless and unprovoked attack. Our casualties are heavy at first. But once we unleash operation “light bulb” our dogfight kill ratio shoots up dramatically and we win the war. We celebrate “VM day” by catching some Z’s.
0600 Several power boaters convene a dock conference just outside our ventilation hatch. One stink potter claims he motored 60 nautical miles yesterday (an entire degree of latitude!) and grumps how long and tiring his vacation is. We clearly hear all the details of their conference and eventually they break up. Once again we try for some sleep.
0700 The aforementioned powerboats roar off into the sunrise. Sleep is impossible at this point so Heather and I talk and play word games until we get out of bed.
1100 Beach Garden Marina where we are staying is the first high-class marina we’ve visited on our trip. We asked an attendant where we could buy a couple blocks of ice, and instead they sent a dock boy to our cockpit, carrying two fresh blocks. Imagine – boat side service!
1245 We depart Beach Garden Marina and round the weather observatory at nearby Grief Point. Our destination today is Lund.
1545 We arrive in Lund, British Columbia. Lund is famous for being the northern terminus of Highway 101 (Interstate 5 in the United States). The southern terminus is 15,000 km away in Puerto Monte, Chile!
Other than this bit of geographical trivia, Lund is really boring. Most of the businesses (including the garbage collector and the post office) have gone out of business. Apparently the only successful business in Lund is printing “Out of Business” and “For Sale” signs, which abound.
Tomorrow we plan to take the ferry to nearby Savary Island. According to the tollbooth the ferryboat itself is for sale, so if we aren’t careful we might accidentally buy the ferry instead of a ride!
But that’s another story…
