Fall Snooze ‘n Cruise By Leslie Carver

Snooze ‘n Cruise is a fun, quarterly club sail to Blake Is. SP open for everyone to attend.

This Fall’s Snooze ‘n Cruise was nothing if not a big adventure. The day dawned with a heavy blanket of fog, so we reconvened the troops at Shilshole to make sure everybody could see where they were going. Going through the locks, Charlotte noticed a keelboat out of San Francisco failing to make the railroad bridge, spinning around, and going stern-down about 45 degrees. By the time we got to Shilshole, the fog was gone, and there was a gorgeous wind of 15 to 20 knots, with an opposing current providing some really big waves. That’s when the adventure really began. A few intrepid dinghy sailors made it to the Island without catastrophe (and had a great time doing so). Others were not so lucky. The 505 fleet was pretty much decimated. Some, knowing the better part of valor decided right away the wind and waves were too much, and traded dinghies for keelboats. Equipment did in some others. Paul S. had rigging trouble right away, and had to finish the trip out on a Hobie. Justin and Alex had some problems, capsized, and the Justin floated away (Lesson: don’t let go of your boat!). Fortunately, some keelboats that were around were able to find Alex, and Alex pointed out Justin, who was then rescued. On the other side of the sound, Craig and Jay were having trouble of their own. After a couple of turtles, Jay got hit by a flying boom – fortunately he didn’t know how badly he was hurt, but Craig looked plenty scared by the time Charlotte arrived for the rescue. Jay had in the meantime been picked up by a CYC boat, who took him back to Shilshole for a trip to the hospital. With Charlotte’s motor out, we pulled up to Foul Play and grabbed Craig. Bob, Keith, and Roy then spent several hours in the water trying to retrieve the boat, and the mostly-novice crew left aboard Charlotte sailed around for a while. Finally the boat was rescued, and we started towing her to Blake. By this time, everybody else had made it safely to the island, and were enjoying a yummy pasta dinner, without firewood. After dinner entertainment was provided by Randy. Charlotte sailed along, encountered some interesting jetsam, and eventually ended up in Elliot Bay with no running lights (a very cold, very tired sleeping person had kicked off the main power below). When we were out of contact for a while, the ever-resourceful Rebecca thought to page Bob, which woke us all up and got us going. Meanwhile, the island crew sent out a rescue barge (they must have been bored, having not sailed in hours), who searched Elliot bay for us. By the time they found us, we were outside the Blake Island breakwater, and ready for sleep. The trip back on Sunday was beautiful, just windy enough to be fun, and sunny. We didn’t need any extra excitement after Saturday!
