Dawg Daze

At the beginning of the year UW does this awesome thing for freshmen called Dawg Daze in which we participate.

Wetake as many students (it does not matter if they are new students, oldstudents or grad students just so long as they are students) as we canout in the keelboats and daysailors. There are some super funorganizational things associated with this.

1a. SIGN UP: You haveto sign up for Dawg Daze. A weekend day works best. Also, if you cansign up for a day both weekends it will protect against the possibilitythat there is terrible weather and no one shows up. Be sure they know that the event runs from 12 to 6 so that they send you volunteers for that whole time!

1b. Once you have set up a day with the Dawg Daze people, let Jim and Megan (or whoever is in charge) at the WAC know that you will be down there that day with tons of people, will be linking the outer dock to the inner dock so that boats don't have to come all the way back in before going back out, and ask if you can borrow 2 or 3 tables. Have one inside for food and one or two outside for registering everyone.

2. ADVERTISE: Put an ad in the Daily. The orientation edition is a good one to get into, so is the edition that comes out during the week before school. Double check with them to make sure the ad is in there, they can sometimes drop ads (If that happens, do not panic. Just get them to run the ad in another edition at a discounted rate.).

3.VOLUNTEERS: You have to organize volunteers to man the boats! Thisinvolves talking to all the associate boat members and asking them ifthey can make it down for at least one of those days to take theirboats out. You also need captains for the club keelboats anddaysailors. ALL of these boats also need crew members. The Dawg Dazepeople also send down some people so they can man the sign up table(Iwill explain this later).

4.SCHEDULE: Set up a schedule so that people can easily see when theyneed to come down to the WAC, what boat they are on and who is helpingthem out.

5. SIGN-UPS: There needs to be a registration table tokeep people somewhat organized. One of the huge things is that everyoneneeds to sign the pink waiver form that is in the binder (it is verysimilar to the normal waiver form but is set up for this one dayevent). Also, you need a table to write down group names and the numberof people in each group. There should be additional columns for theboat that each group gets on, what time they left and when they shouldget back.

6. CHECK THE GAS! Make sure that each of the boats has enough gas and that there are some reserves in the shed.

7. KEEP YOUR VOLUNTEERS HAPPY: Get food! You can set up a table with food on it in the shop. Water, apples and turkey wraps (2 flats of each) are what have been bought in the past (from Costco) but feel free to go for it!
